WiMax stands for ‘Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access’, and it’s the brand that certifies that a product meets all the standards for the ‘IEEE 802.16′ wireless access. These standards will allow a connection from 50 or 60 Km. at broad band or modem cable speeds, being wireless. This new standard will be compatible with previous ones, like Wi-Fi’s (IEEE 802.11).
WiMax technology will be the base for Internet access in metropolitan networks, will help to facilitate the connection in rural areas, and will be used by companies to improve internal communications. What’s more, the spread of this technology will result in the installation of other devices, such as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).
It is important for the promotion of the use of the WiMax standards that electronic hardware manufacturers come to agreements, giving rise to certificates that guarantee the compatibility and the interoperability of aerials, processors and receivers. That’s the job of ‘WiMax Forum’, a non lucrative association formed by tens of firms engaged with the observance of the IEEE 802.16 standard.
