Fujitsu has announced the development of the BroadOne(TM) WX series of mobile WiMAX(*1) base stations. The BroadOne WX300, an outdoor macrocell base station, is light, energy-efficient, and – as the smallest in its class(*2) – occupies less space, which makes it economical to deploy. The BroadOne WX300 will be available globally beginning in the second quarter of 2008 (April-June).

Fujitsu is positioning the BroadOne WX series mobile WiMAX base stations as a key part of its global product solutions for the rapidly emerging wireless broadband industry. Wireless broadband is widely expected to transform the way people live and work in the next-generation network era, as it promises high-speed, high-capacity connectivity to everyone, everywhere.

Fujitsu has designed its new base stations with many features to meet the global requirements for mobile WiMAX networks. The base stations consume low levels of power, deliver superior performance, and, as the
smallest base stations available, are easy to install. As a result, mobile WiMAX service providers will be
able to build their wireless broadband infrastructure at a lower cost and offer end-users service at more reasonable rates.

Three more companies have a license and are willing to launch this service at the end of the year: Aló (Clearwire), Orange-France Télécom and Neo-Sky (Iberdrola).

All of them workd with hardware from Alvarion for fixed wimax. Most of their customers use subsidized wimax payed for by regional governments in Spain in order to extend broadband to rural and mountain areas. This is the case of the Basque Country (110 towns), Andalousia (512 towns), Castille-Leon (1,749 towns), Catalonia (330 towns) and Navarre (162 towns). All these networks are actually owned by the regional governments. There are around 20,000 domestic wimax customers in Spain.

If you are wondering which is the biggest wimax provider in Spain, you will be surprised. It is not Telefónica, nor France Télécom. It is a small telecoms operator in the Basque region, Euskaltel, the same sponsoring famous cycling team Euskaltel Pays Basque. The Basque region decided to use wimax to carry broadband to rural areas, where Telefónica’s ADSL was not available. Euskaltel won the contract and has already covered 102 small cities in the Basque mountains. It has two types of service: 300 Kbps for 22 euros a month and 1 MBps for 39 euros. If telephone is added to the offer, you should add to the bill another 13.75 euros. Many people are using Skype, though.Other Spanish companies are catching up with Euskaltel. Iberbanda, recently bought by Telefónica, is the one with the largest number of customers. It won contracts with the Andalousian, Catalonian, Castillian and Navarrese regional governments, but it is going slower than Euskaltel. Finally, Clearwire’s Aló is also selling wimax, though only for companies. Aló plans to expand commercially by franchising its service to small shops.
