The last one has been created in France and is called KillBills. It offers a system that anyone can use in order to allow access to his wi-fi network without the risks of just opening it. If you want to use it, you need a Linksys WRT54G router and download the KillBills firmware.

Fon’s clones, more or less similar, start to show up. The latest one to appear is TLibre and it will operate in Marseilles with a wi-fi network based on the users’ hotspots. It’s different from Fon in the fact that users will have to pay 5 euros per month to be part of the system, in exchange of unlimited phone calls. In fact, voice services, especially via mobiles (wififon), are the ‘killer application’ of wi-fi networks. In TLibre’s case, clients have to habilitate their access, even though this doesn’t mean that they have to pay for the ADSL (something that Fon users must do), since the company is in charge of the installation and maintenance of the aerials.

This is an exhaustive article published in El Mundo about hospitals that are installing wi-fi aerials in order to improve their services to their patients. Thanks to wireless Internet connections, they can access to medical records quicker and from any point of the hospital, and they can also send prescriptions directly to the pharmacy. These hospitals use a central server where doctors connect via wi-fi from the rooms, or even from the operating theatres. To make that possible, they use computing terminals or PDA and TabletPC; San Llàtzer Hospital in Palma de Mallorca or Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia are two examples. Moraleja and Zarzuela (Sanitas) Hospitals and the Clínica Universitaria in Navarre have installed wi-fi too.

We are tracking with interest the news that arrive from the United States about city councils that decide to create their own wi-fi networks. We have to point out that they do it because broadband Internet access in the USA isn’t as available as in Europe and, therefore, prices are slightly higher. So city councils are trying to become the new would-be competitor to cable operators, who currently act like quasi-monopolies. The trouble is that many councils, under the guise of a praiseworthy project, create the networks on their own -as they create new sewer systems- and try to make them unique. And when asked by the media why they do it, they make up all kinds of excuses. The most eye-catching excuse is that given by the Philadelphia City Council: “The wi-fi network will make the city more attractive for companies and job-hunters”. Well, that could be true if they cut broadband prices down. But it is quite unlikely that public wi-fi convinces a company to settle in Philadelphia.

The 18 reports of 2004 became 48 in 2005, and they are expected to rise to 70 this year. Most of these thefts happen in cafés with wi-fi hotspots where people use their laptops forgetting that they are expensive machines that can attract thieves.

The news has caused panic, even though it’s not that bad. Google has registered several patents of a commercial product,theadvertising-funded wi-fi, in the USA. In truth, the search engine aims to protect three technologies that allow offering Internet wireless access while showing ads of the type of GoogleAds.This means that, depending on where the user is, he/she will see different ads. In principle, this will permit to offer free connection. Actually, Gogle is already trying to make this very same thing in San Francisco and a nuber of blogs have reported repeatedly the interest of Fon’s shareholder in creating a global wi-fi network.
