Only three companies are currently providing wimax services in Spain: Iberbanda (bought by Telefónica in 2006), Euskaltel (regional Basque operator) and aeromax, a small company based in the Mediterranean Coast. Three more companies have a license and are willing to launch this service at the end of the year: Aló (Clearwire), Orange-France Télécom and Neo-Sky (Iberdrola).

All of them workd with hardware from Alvarion for fixed wimax. Most of their customers use subsidized wimax payed for by regional governments in Spain in order to extend broadband to rural and mountain areas. This is the case of the Basque Country (110 towns), Andalousia (512 towns), Castille-Leon (1,749 towns), Catalonia (330 towns) and Navarre (162 towns). All these networks are actually owned by the regional governments. There are around 20,000 domestic wimax customers in Spain.
