If you are wondering which is the biggest wimax provider in Spain, you will be surprised. It is not Telefónica, nor France Télécom. It is a small telecoms operator in the Basque region, Euskaltel, the same sponsoring famous cycling team Euskaltel Pays Basque. The Basque region decided to use wimax to carry broadband to rural areas, where Telefónica’s ADSL was not available. Euskaltel won the contract and has already covered 102 small cities in the Basque mountains. It has two types of service: 300 Kbps for 22 euros a month and 1 MBps for 39 euros. If telephone is added to the offer, you should add to the bill another 13.75 euros. Many people are using Skype, though.Other Spanish companies are catching up with Euskaltel. Iberbanda, recently bought by Telefónica, is the one with the largest number of customers. It won contracts with the Andalousian, Catalonian, Castillian and Navarrese regional governments, but it is going slower than Euskaltel. Finally, Clearwire’s Aló is also selling wimax, though only for companies. Aló plans to expand commercially by franchising its service to small shops.
