Electric companies always looked to telecommunications out of the corner of their eyes. In the past, Endesa, Fenosa and Iberdrola (Spanish companies) invested in operators like Airtel, Auna, Euskaltel or Neo. Their businesses are very similar: to manage a network and offer services through it.After the appearance of PLC (power line communications), electric companies decided to try it in Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza, but they failed. But now, they have retrieved their interest with the discovery of wimax. This technology allows them to create telecommunications networks with minimum investments and a wide covering.Toronto’s electrics is creating a wimax infrastructure back home. And the last company to join the club is the German New Energie, which aims to launch a commercial service in Rhine-Westfalia, where the first trials seem to have succeeded. In Spain we haven’t heard of a project like that; nonetheless, Iberdrola owns Neo, which has a wimax licence.
