The North American company GigaBeam has patented the ‘WiFibre’, a wireless technology that reaches speeds of 1Gbps. It will allow to transmit videos of 90 minutes in less than 6 seconds; its power is already building dreams about all kind of applications. The name derives from the words ‘wi-fi’ and ‘fibre’, since it has the advantages of a wireless system complemented with the speed of fibre optics. But, at the moment, WiFibre requires that sender and receiver have sight contact, so it still is more like a substitute for acens-lines than for user connections. The GigaBeam system transmits in bands of up to 70 to 96 Ghz that are not affected by the weather. Nonetheless, nowadays fibre optics are still quicker; that makes WiFibre a sensible option only for those areas where networks are needed urgently or where it is not possible to install tubes.
