Cetecom is not in the spotlight of debates, even though it is the laboratory in charge of certifying wimax units and it is settled in Malaga. That’s why I was delighted when I learned that Cinco Días had interviewed Luis Fernando Martínez, Cetecom’s director, who says that he feels very optimistic about the future of this technology. He thinks that wimax, thanks to its low infrastructure costs, is especially recommendable to spread broadband in rural and underdeveloped areas. As far as its competition with 3G is concerned, Martínez believes that both technologies can converge, so that mobile phones are equipped both with UMTS (or HSDPA) and wimax.Cetecom is under the control of the Junta de Andalucía, the Andalusian government; it has created in the city of Malaga a dense network of telecommunications businesses, which start to be compared to the Californian Silicon Valley. The lab, that employs 150 engineers, invoiced €17 millions in 2005, mainly in other countries. But it doens’t only focus on wimax, the laboratory also devotes its efforts to RFID and bluetooth.
