Samsung, Nokia’s first rival, has already joint the wimax technology. Nokia, however, still wonders how they should affront the boost of this new wireless machinery that threatens with start a revolution in the world of mobile telecommunications. The company has decided to remain aside until a new market is created. One of the key factors in this decision-making has been the experience that Nokia lived with wi-fi: they started to introduce it in 1999 but it didn’t succeed until 4 years later. As far as wimax is concerned, the Finnish firm prefers to wait and see what happens, especially with the mobile version (802.16e) that won’t be ready until 2008.Anyway, Nokia believes that wimax and 3G are compatible and complementary. The technicians for the mobile company think that, little by little, wimax will substitute wi-fi in hotspots.
