Iberbanda has been asked to install WiMax in rural areas in Castile and Leon by the committee of this autonomous region. This operator, sponsored by El Corte Inglés and Prisa, is already carrying out similar projects in Andalusia (the first area in Spain where they started to experiment with the wireless technology), Catalonia and Navarre. Apart from Iberbanda, Euskaltel also gives this service, although only in the Basque Country. WiMax display in Castile and Leon is divided in several parts. The first of them will finish at the end of this year and will allow 100.000 people from rural areas to connect to high speed Internet. The project will conclude in 2007. Iberbanda started in Andalusia WiMax first European commercial experience with Intel technology in July and August. For that, the company installed Alvarion equipments with Rosedale chips for 500 clients spread around Almería (Canjayar, Instinción, Ohanes, Padules y Ragol). In the first phase, users will need an external aerial to get signal from WiMax; then the aerial will be inside the buildings, and in the third phase, the users’ equipments (laptops, PDA, etc.) will connect themselves to the WiMax network. In this phase, mobility in the access to the Internet or IP telephony through WiMax will be a reality.
