La Giettaz winter resort, in the French Alps, will soon enjoy a WiMax connection that will allow access to the Internet all along its 36 km. of slope. The new infrastructure will also include little Wi-Fi nets through aerials located in the chair lift’s machinery. This option allows the system to be operative from the very first day, because the laptops equipped with this technology are widely available. The most difficult part of the process is to connect the Wi-Fi nets to the Internet; this is when WiMax will help.At the moment, the installation of a fibre optics infrastructure is not considered because of its price; neither are satellite transmission and reception parabolic aerials, because of the technical problems they involve, especially the latency. Until now, the only connection to the Internet in the area was either through the traditional modem or through an ISDN line of 128 Kbps, available at the Town Hall, the school or the Tourist Office.
